Meeting and Talking with Authors/Illustrators: From Mo Willems to Veronica Miller Jamiso

Alice McNeer

This spring, students in fourth and fifth grade had the fantastic opportunity of having authors and illustrators come into their classroom--virtually. The students met authors Mo Willems and brothers Jarrett and Jerome Pumphrey. They learned about collaboration and how hard it is to write an “easy reader” story as you can’t use any juicy words. As a bonus, the students drew Piggie with Mo Willems.

In another amazing virtual meeting, students connected with Kelly Yang, author of the Front Desk trilogy. She talked about her new book, Yes We Will, which celebrates Asian American pioneers. Her favorite quote from basketball player Jeremy Lin is, “When you get your shot, do not hesitate.”

The students had a wonderful visit with author John Schu and illustrator Veronica Miller Jamison. They discussed how they took inspiration from their elementary school days when creating the book, This Is A School. A school isn’t just a place for learning but also for play, creativity, sharing, trust, hope, healing, and connection.
