Day 2: Pancakes, Old Forest Growth, Rain, Hikes, and More!

Kirsten Zender, Middle School Teacher

Day two started with a pancake and sausage breakfast which strengthened us for our Old Forest Growth Plot Study with some rain! Students measured and identified trees by size and even used a Carbon measuring tape to see how much energy a tree could provide for a cheeseburger or even a year for students breathing--very interesting!

We had lunch at Storm King Hall since it was a little rainy, but afterward, the sun came out, and we hiked to the mouth of Barnes Creek. On our return trip, we had to identify trees/plants like Western Cedar or Salal, for example. After dinner, we had our night hike and observed shooting stars, the quietness and learned how our eyes adjusted to the night.

PS: We also played plenty of games.
