On the first day of their IslandWood trip, the students said goodbye to their parents, rode a bus to Bainbridge Island, hauled their gear to their cabins, worked in groups and had some relaxation time before bringing the day to a close by heading to bed.
After goodbyes at school, fourth-grade students and teachers were on their way to IslandWood via a charter bus. With a short drive to Seattle, the bus boarded the ferry headed to Bainbridge Island. During the trip, students relaxed and visited the deck to take in the view.
Upon arriving at IslandWood, the students completed their first team-building task of getting their bags to the lodge. Next, they split into their field groups and participated in get-to-know-you activities with their classmates and IslandWood instructors. Each group created their own "Communi-tree Agreement" to set learning expectations and rules to keep everyone safe and ready to learn.
Later, the students enjoyed some downtime in the Lodge. Some played card games and read books while others played outside on the grass. After dinner, our field groups participated in their first night activity with some groups going on a night hike and others enjoying entertainment at the indoor campfire before heading to bed.
