Resilience

In an institution such as Eton School that educates young children, it is important for us to develop a program and an environment that instills and cultivates resilience. In this issue of Connect, you will read about how the Montessori philosophy—and the prepared environment of the Montessori and Montessori-inspired classrooms—cultivate resilience in children. Those children are then better equipped to become adults prepared to take on the challenges of an ever-changing world.

"Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging"

At Eton, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging work is not a trend. There is no end goal or final destination toward which we are working. This work is a part of constant improvement and engages our core value of life-long learning. In this issue of Connect, you will read more about what DEIB work looks like at Eton School and learn a bit more about the DEIB Committee.

"Peace Education"

The articles in this edition of Connect focus on how those different ideas of peace are woven into the Eton School program throughout the various grade levels. Whether it is defined as the absence of conflict or as the presence of serenity or quietness, the teaching of peace to children is fundamental to the development of a new generation better attuned to the concept of peace. Perhaps Maria Montessori put it best, “We cannot achieve world harmony simply by attempting to unite all these adult people who are so different, but we can achieve it if we begin with the child who is not born with national and racial prejudices.” (Quoted in Maria Montessori, Her Life and Work by E.M. Standing)
